Mental health problems affect one in four of us, yet too many people are made to feel isolated, ashamed and worthless because of this. Time to Talk Day encourages everyone to be more open about mental health – to talk, to listen, to change lives.

On Time to Talk Day we want everyone to have a conversation about mental health – whether that’s texting a friend, chatting to a colleague or organising an event. By doing so, we can change the way people think, talk and act about mental health problems. We want to make stigma and discrimination a thing of the past.

The more we talk, the more we can break down barriers and shatter myths - helping to end the isolation, shame and worthlessness that too many of us feel when experiencing a mental health problem. Talking has the power to change lives.


Boro Man Can is supporting the Time to Talk Day campaign to change the way people think and act about mental health problems.


Here are the sorts of activities going on around the country:

  • Pub Quiz: always a good place to get people talking - the faithful British pub. Some pubs are adding a mental health round to their quiz to get people talking and bust some myths.
  • Coffee Morning: another good way to get people talking. A good cup of tea and some cake, and you might just find yourself sharing a story or two about mental health amongst yourselves.
  • Arts & Crafts: it might not sound like everyone’s favourite, but art and craft sessions can be a great way of sharing and having fun at the same time. Drawing, making, creating, they can all lead to conversation.
  • Sussed: Time to Change has teamed up with Sussed to make a conversation card game around mental health. The cards can be an icebreaker.
  • Would You Rather: we know that talking about mental health can feel awkward, but it doesn't have to. This year, we're using the popular game 'Would you rather?' to help break the ice and get the conversations flowing.
  • Walking: Sometimes getting out and walking is a good way to promote conversation. Of course this can be combined with some of the card games mentioned above!
  • The National Football Museum in Manchester is hosting a frank and positive discussion on football and mental health, featuring former Premier League footballer Marvin Sordell, CALM ambassador Jonny Sharples, and representatives from Andy's Man Club and Time to Change. The talk is free to attend for museum ticket holders and City of Manchester residents.  

Where are the local events?

Locally, there are events in Hartlepool (Hartlepool and East Durham Mind), Newton Aycliffe (Pioneering Care Partnership), Peterlee (Resilience training at East Durham Trust) and Tudhoe (Tudhoe Community Center with ManHealth).

In Middlesbrough, CVFM will be hosting a 2hr mental health forum with experts and champions (those who have experienced mental health issues). You can listen live on 104.5FM in Middlesbrough, as well around the world through the website and app. The show will also be available to listen again online after the show.
