MY #BOROMANCAN STORY

"When we see the mental health campaigns, for a lot of people the barriers go up... it's the first word that people can't get over"

Gary first experienced wellbeing problems when he was 16 or 17. Difficulties in his life caused him to have low moods. He found it hard to speak up at this age due to confidence issues. He struggled to find a long term job, which caused depression and anxiety, particularly in the winter months. A full time job did go some way to giving him a more positive outlook, but still he struggled when things got on top of him. He didn't feel comfortable sharing, and hid his struggles from co-workers.

The wake-up call came when close friends at work and family members began to notice he wasn't his usual self. He says that was "the turning point".

Gary says he had stopped doing the hobbies and passtimes that made him happy, and that further contributed to the downward spiral. He realised he needed to take time for himself, almost to be "selfish".

Going through a divorce was especially hard and it was this event which led Gary to speak to his doctor and access professional help from mental health experts to help him make sense of his struggles and put his life back together.
